As part of our Pets Are Family program, SSHS offers temporary care program for families in need of a temporary home for their pets. 

The purpose of our Pets Are Family program is to provide temporary care for pets and to reunite them with their families following a crisis.

Pets Are Family Program Eligibility

  • The owner is a victim of domestic violence

  • The owner is temporarily hospitalized for medical treatment or rehabilitation

Pets Are Family Program Enrollment Criteria

  • All cases must come to SSHS as a referral from

    • South Suburban Family Shelter

    • Advocate South Suburban Hospital

  • 60 days of free boarding will be offered either in shelter or approved foster home.

  • Must have one method of communication (email, text, phone).

  • All animals must be behaviorally sound or within our behavior coordinators scope of work.

  • Medically needy pets must be approved by our shelter veterinarian.

  • Maximum 2 pets per case. At least 1 pet must be a dog.

  • No feral/outdoor cats or barnyard animals allowed. Limited exotics.

  • All pets must be over 8 weeks of age.

  • Pregnant animals are accepted, however puppies/kittens born into the program will automatically become the property of SSHS.

  • Pets will be spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to exiting the program.

  • Two 30 minute visitations allowed at the shelter per month.
